Easy Shipping Solutions That Help you Sell More Products
One of the big reasons that WordPress powers over 34% of the most popular sites on the Internet is one word: “free.” WordPress is a free, open source content management system and the most popular CMS in the world. WooCommerce is no exception. WooCommerce is the world’s most customizable eCommerce solution today. Since Automattic (the people who created WordPress) acquired WooCommerce in 2015, a lot has changed.
Although it is true that the WooCommerce framework is free, the goodies that make your store awesome (and more profitable) are probably not free. Shipping your products is one of those “not-free” extensions, or plugins. I’m not talking about dropshipping but if you sell your products from your WooCommerce store.
Adding familiar shipping methods to your WooCommerce site builds trust, credibility, and can improve your customer’s shopping experience. This can increase your sales. Brands like Amazon, Macy’s and others spend millions on their eCommerce sites every year. Fortunately, you don’t have to spend millions to build a great WooCommerce site…but it isn’t free.
Free eCommerce Solutions Cost Time and Money
Building a free shipping platform into your WooCommerce application is possible. You have to build the Shipping Zones section in your WooCommerce settings and shipping prices into each Shipping Zone you have. Then add the shipping costs for every Shipping Zone. This is an incredibly time-consuming process that can delay the launch of your store. It is so time-consuming that a developer could charge thousands to build a “free shipping platform” from the time involved. Or it could take weeks to add the “free” shipping method. Delays like this cost you money that you could be earning from selling your products. That is ONLY to add shipping costs you choose to your store. It does not tailor to any shipping carrier such as FedEx, UPS, or USPS.
Since I am located in the United States, this article focuses on the shipping methods available in the United States.
I hope this article helps you determine what the best shipping method is for your business. As a web developer, this is how I explain shipping options to my clients.
1. UPSP Shipping Method
This extension accesses the USPS API to give your customers the shipping rates charged by the USPS. USPS calculates shipping charges internationally as well as domestically.
The USPS Shipping Method also calculates shipping rates for each domestic and international method they have such as First Class, Flat Rate, Priority Mail, etc. If your primary method of shipping is USPS, this is the extension for your business.
For more store owner convenience, you can add the Stamps.com extension and link directly to your Stamps.com account. Get discounted rates from Stamps.com and have your costs deducted directly from your Stamps.com account.
2. UPS Shipping Method
United Parcel Service has been in business since 1907 and has grown into a multi-billion dollar shipping company. If you prefer to ship by UPS, this plugin allows you to add real-time UPS shipping rates to your store. This plugin does require SimpleXML added to your server. Don’t worry, if SimpleXML is not installed on your server, your server probably doesn’t work. It’s been a part of the PHP core since PHP 5.1.2. The current minimum PHP version is 5.6 (as of October 2019 and not much longer).
Add Next Day, 2nd Day, 3 Day, Ground and Standard UPS rates to your store and keep the rates updated directly from UPS.
3. FedEx Shipping Method
If your primary shipping method is FedEx, then this is the plugin for you. This plugin requires your store to use US or Canadian dollars. You may need developer to add SOAP capabilities to your server though. This plugin will allow you to add all the different FedEx shipping methods to your store and get the correct shipping prices added to your store.
