Straight Talk about Marketing For Small and Medium-sized Businesses

Is This What Your Marketing Plan Looks Like?

 Businessman with crossed fingers

I am not saying that prayer is a bad thing, but some business owners rely on prayer as their ONLY marketing resource. I believe that prayer can be a powerful tool to inspire and motivate people. But when it comes to marketing, prayer lacks something to be desired: consistent results.

Several other activities and entities will not help you people purchase your products and services better. While I’m at it, here is my short list of other things that will not help you gain more customers or clients:

  1. Prayer
  2. The Law of Attraction
  3. Positive Thinking
  4. The Government
  5. The President
  6. Congress
  7. The Small Business Administration
  8. Your Favorite Deity or Religious Figure (yeah, I said it)
  9. The Easter bunny
  10. Santa Claus (I think you get the idea)

Although all of these things can help your marketing, it is unrealistic to think of them as viable solutions to grow your business.

Marketing 101

A lot of business people tend to get sales and marketing mixed up or think they are the same thing. Let me clear that up for you in layman’s terms.

Sales is the act of closing a transaction and getting paid on that purchase.

Marketing is how business owners like you keep your business name and service in front of the people who buy your products or services. Good marketing can lead to more sales if it is done consistently and with consistency in the messaging.

You may have an excellent product or service. But if the only people who know about it are people who do not want your product or service, do not need your product or service, or can’t afford your product or service, then you have bad marketing.

Results Require Investment and Action

Most business people want the biggest “bang for their buck.” And I don’t blame them. The price tag on these activities can get big quickly, especially if you are considering a Google Ads campaign. Some people are always looking for the best in “free” solutions. Here is the downside. Free marketing solutions get you free marketing results or no results. There is a time and money trade-off for your efforts. If they don’t cost money, they cost time to implement. If you invest a lot of money, it may not take a lot of time to get the results you want, such as with a carefully placed ad.

One of my favorite business quotes is from Grant Cardone:

“No one is going to come to your house and make your dreams come true.”

One Marketing Technique Is Not Enough

When I began my business career, I came across the phrase “marketing mix” often, but now I don’t hear very often anymore. This term refers to the various activities all used in conjunction to ensure that people know you are in business. Your marketing mix should also target those individuals who want and are willing to pay for your products or services.
